How Do I Stand Out in a Saturated Market?

3 min readPositioning

Search any small-business subreddit right now. The single most-asked question, in any variant, is this one:

How do I stand out in a saturated market?

The comments underneath will hand you tactics. Post more. Better hashtags. Cold outreach. A new logo. A niche. A funnel. A guarantee. A course. A podcast.

None of it works. because standing out isn't a tactics problem. It's a positioning decision you haven't made yet.

What "stand out" actually means

When a buyer sees six versions of what you do, they're not comparing craftsmanship. They can't. They can't tell the difference between two consultants, two agencies, two coaches, or two contractors from the outside. What they compare is the frame you're standing inside.

Every business in a crowded market occupies one of three positions by default:

  • The interchangeable one. No visible difference. Wins on price or dies.
  • The compared one. Ends up on a shortlist next to two others. Wins ~30% of the time on gut.
  • The chosen one. Not on a shortlist. The buyer arrived already deciding to hire you specifically. Wins ~90% of the time.

Every tactic in the comments underneath that Reddit thread is designed to help you win harder as the interchangeable one. You cannot win harder as the interchangeable one. That's the whole point of the position.

The two questions that end the sameness

Standing out isn't a design flourish or a new hook. It's a decision you make once, in writing, before you touch anything else.

Question 1: Who specifically is this for? Not "small businesses." Not "companies who value quality." A specific type of buyer, in a specific stage, with a specific pain, describable in one sentence.

If you can't answer, everyone you talk to is a maybe. If you can, half the market self-selects out and the other half self-selects in.

Question 2: What are they hiring you instead of? Not "the competition." The specific alternative in their head. The status quo. The in-house hire. The freelancer. The $99 tool. The doing-nothing.

If you don't know what you're replacing, you can't explain why the trade is worth it. If you do know, the entire pitch writes itself.

Two sentences. That's the diagnostic. Most businesses can't finish either one.

Why the tactics never worked

The reason "post more, get better at your funnel, redo your website" doesn't work is that all of it amplifies whatever position you already occupy. If the position is interchangeable, more posting produces more interchangeable content. A better funnel converts more interchangeable leads to interchangeable calls.

Bigger volume, same conversion frame. The math doesn't move.

Change the position. the answer to those two sentences. and the same volume converts three or four times harder, at prices you couldn't quote last quarter without wincing. We've watched clients raise fees ~40% inside 90 days after doing exactly this. Not because they got better at delivery. Because they stopped being interchangeable.

What we do about it

This is what the Clarity Sprint is. Two weeks. We answer the two questions above with you, in writing, with real market research. You leave with the position. the specific frame that makes your buyer choose you specifically, before any comparison begins.

If it doesn't land? We refund the sprint. That's how confident we are that the position is what's missing.

The number of businesses drowning in a saturated market is not shrinking. The number of businesses inside those markets who chose to stop drowning is very, very small. That's the whole opportunity.

Stop competing on tactics. Start competing on the frame.
